คำนามชี้เฉพาะ

Proper Nouns เป็นคำนามที่เป็นชื่อเฉพาะของ Common Noun เช่น

   ชื่อคน(Person Name) เช่น Somsak, Tom, Daeng
   ชื่อสถานที่( Place Name) เช่น Australia, Bangkok, Sukhumvit Road, Toyota
   ชื่อบอกระยะเวลา(Time Name) เช่น Saturday, January, Christmas
         เพื่อให้เข้าใจได้ง่าย ลองดูการเปรียบเทียบระหว่าง Common Nouns และ Proper Nouns

Common Noun	Proper Noun
man, boy (ผู้ชาย , เด็กผู้ชาย)	Nadech (ณเดชน์ – ชื่อคน)
woman, girl (ผู้หญิง , เด็กผู้หญิง)	Yaya (ญาญ่า – ชื่อคน)
restaurant (ร้านอาหาร)	McDonalds (แมคโดนัลด์)
month (เดือน)	January (มกราคม)
film (ภาพยนตร์)	Die Hard (ชื่อภาพยนตร์)

       จะเห็นได้ว่า Commons Nouns จะเป็นคำนามที่มีความหมายกว้างกว่า Proper Nouns ซึ่งเป็นชื่อเฉพาะของคน สัตว์ และสิ่งต่าง ๆ

หลักการใช้ Proper Nouns

- ขึ้นต้นด้วยอักษรตัวใหญ่เสมอ ตัวอย่างเช่น

They like John. (จะไม่เขียนว่า They like john. )
I live in England.
She works for Sony.
The last day in January is Monday.

Proper Nouns ที่ไม่มี The

- จะไม่มีการใช้ The กับชื่อ นามสกุล ของบุคคล

- โดยทั่วไปจะไม่ใช้ The นำหน้าชื่อบริษัท เช่น General Motors, Air France, British Airways, Warner Brothers

          เว้นเสียแต่ว่าชื่อจดทะเบียนของบริษัทเหล่านั้นขึ้นต้นด้วย The เช่น The Post Publishing Public Co., Ltd กรณีนี้บริษัทไปจดชื่อขึ้นต้นด้วย The เอง จึงใช้ The นำหน้า พูดง่าย ๆ คือ The เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของชื่อบริษัท

-  โดยทั่วไปจะไม่ใช้ The นำหน้าชื่อสถานที่ เช่น

towns	Washington (not *the Washington), Paris, Tokyo
states, regions	Texas, Kent, Eastern Europe
countries	England, Thailand, China
continents	Asia, Europe, North America
islands	Phuket
mountains	Everest

          เว้นเสียแต่ว่าชื่อประเทศมีคำว่า  ”States”,”Kingdom” หรือ  “Republic” เราจึงเติม The ข้างหน้า เช่น

states	the United States, the US, the United States of America, the USA
kingdom	the United Kingdom, the UK
republic	the French Republic

- เราไม่ใช้ The กับชื่อตำแหน่งที่มีชื่อบุคคลตามหลัง เช่น

the president, the king	President Bush (ไม่ใช้ the President Bush)
the captain, the detective	Captain Kirk, Detective Colombo
the doctor, the professor	Doctor Well, Dr Well, Professor Dolittle
my uncle, your aunt	Uncle Jack, Aunt Jill

โดยทั่วไปชื่อตำแหน่งจะขึ้นต้นด้วย the แต่ถ้ามีชื่อบุคคลตามหลังตำแหน่งจะไม่ใช้ the

I wanted to speak to the doctor. (ไม่มีชื่อคน จึงใช้ the doctor)
I wanted to speak to Doctor Brown. (มีชื่อคน จึงใช้ Doctor Brown โดยไม่มี The)

- ชื่อทะเลสาป ภูเขา ที่ตามด้วยชื่อ จะไม่มี the

the lake	Lake Victoria
the mount	Mount Everest

- โดยทั่วไปจะไม่ใช้ the กับชื่อถนน สี่แยก สวนสาธารณะ ฯลฯ

- เราไม่ใช้ the โดยทั่วไป กับ ชื่อร้านค้า โรงแรม ธนาคาร ฯลฯ ที่ขึ้นต้นด้วยชื่อบุคคล แล้วตามด้วย ‘s หรือ -s เช่น

shops	Harrods, Marks & Spencer, Maceys
banks	Barclays Bank
hotels, restaurants	Steve’s Hotel, Joe’s Cafe, McDonalds
churches, cathedrals	St John’s Church, St Peter’s Cathedral

- สิ่งก่อสร้าง หรือ อาคารขนาดใหญ่ ที่มีสองพยางค์ หากขึ้นต้นด้วยชื่อบุคคล หรือ สถานที่ จะไม่ใช้ the นำหน้า

people	Kennedy Airport, Alexander Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral
places	Heathrow Airport, Waterloo Station, Edinburgh Castle

Proper Nouns ที่มี The นำหน้า

- ชื่อประเทศที่มีคำว่า “States”,”Kingdom”, “Republic”

- ใช้ the นำหน้า คลอง ,แม่น้ำ, ทะเล ,มหาสมุทร เช่น

canals	the Suez Canal
rivers	the River Nile, the Nile
seas	the Mediterranean Sea, the Mediterranean
oceans	the Pacific Ocean, the Pacific

- โดยทั่วไปเราใช้ the กับชื่อบุคคล หรือ สถานที่ ที่อยู่ในรูปพหูพจน์ เช่น

people (ครอบครัว, เช่น)	the Clintons (ครอบครัวคลินตัน)
countries	the Philippines, the United States
island groups	the Virgin Islands, the British Isles
mountain ranges	the Himalayas, the Alps

- เราใช้ the กับชื่อสิ่งเหล่านี้ (ดูในตารางด้านล่าง)

hotels, restaurants	the Ritz Hotel, the Peking Restaurant
banks	the National Westminster Bank
cinemas, theatres	the Royal Theatre, the ABC Cinema
museums	the British Museum, the National Gallery
buildings	the White House, the Crystal Palace
newspapers	the Daily Telegraph, the Sunday Post
organisations	the United Nations, the BBC, the European Union

- เราใช้ the กับชื่อที่ มีคำว่า of เช่น
